Silke Hamers is nog lang niet klaar na haar legendarische deelname aan het tiende seizoen van The Voice van Vlaanderen, en haar krachtige stem zal haar voorlopig nog niet verlaten.

Haar zang- en podiumstijl balanceren tussen sereen en alternatief, en haar gevarieerde optredens in The Voice van Vlaanderen laten haar imago op een vaak energieke en aanstekelijke manier zien, die de camera's altijd perfect wisten vast te leggen.

Nu het seizoen voorbij is en Silke haar vocale strijd heeft gestreden, is ze klaar voor grotere en betere dingen. The Voice van Vlaanderen was slechts het begin van haar wereldwijde doorbraak en het is duidelijk dat ze, ondanks haar jonge leeftijd, een absoluut onstuitbare kracht in de muziekindustrie is. Haar uitstraling is aanstekelijk om naar te kijken en te luisteren, en ze weet in alles wat ze doet het beste van zichzelf te geven, terwijl ze tegelijkertijd een inspiratiebron is voor vele mensen over de hele wereld.

Haar samenwerking met Joost Klein als haar zang- en performancecoach was werkelijk inspirerend om te zien, en hun werkrelatie bracht de wederzijdse talenten van beide artiesten op een uitzonderlijke schaal naar voren, zoals nog nooit eerder vertoond. Haar harde werk om een ​​internationale ster te worden heeft al zijn vruchten afgeworpen, en het is onmogelijk te voorspellen waar ze hierna naartoe zal gaan - zeker gezien het feit dat ze voor velen een alternatief rolmodel is geworden.

Het was een fascinerende ervaring om persoonlijk met Silke te praten en meer te weten te komen over haar kunst en haar levensverhaal. Het was echt een droom die uitkwam om met iemand te spreken die zoveel artistieke vrijheid en zelfstandigheid heeft. Haar persoonlijkheid straalt in elke interactie en ze zorgde ervoor dat iedereen haar aan het einde van het interview echt kende.

Silke Hamers is far from finished after her legendary participation in the tenth season of The Voice of Flanders, and her powerful voice will not be leaving her anytime soon.

Her singing and stage style balance between serene and alternative, and her varied performances on The Voice of Flanders showcase her image in an often energetic and infectious way, which the cameras always managed to capture perfectly.

Now that the season is over and Silke has fought her vocal battle, she is ready for bigger and better things. The Voice of Flanders was just the beginning of her global breakthrough, and it is clear that, despite her young age, she is an absolutely unstoppable force in the music industry. Her charisma is infectious to watch and listen to, and she knows how to give her best in everything she does, while simultaneously being a source of inspiration to many people around the world. 

Her collaboration with Joost Klein as her vocal and performance coach was truly inspiring to witness, and their working relationship brought out the mutual talents of both artists on an exceptional scale, as never seen before. Her hard work to become an international star has already paid off, and it is impossible to predict where she will go next—especially given the fact that she has become an alternative role model for many.

The 21-year-old singer/songwriter is deeply passionate about both song and dance, with her multi-talented skillset pushing her towards a blooming and successful career that she has worked hard to build for herself. Her dedication to both her life and career is awe-inspiring, and her young age shows that she is just getting started in the music industry; and she's sure to be one of the next biggest stars. She is someone you will want to keep on your radar without a doubt, and she's an impossible star to ignore with her unique personal style and strong vocal performances making her unlike anybody else.

Speaking personally with Silke to learn more about her art and her journey was something truly mesmerizing for me, and it was honestly a dream come true to speak to someone with so much artistic liberty and self-sufficiency. Her personality is radiant in every interaction she shares, and she made sure that people would know her by the end of the interview.

1. Hoe ziet je muzikale proces eruit?

Mijn muzikaal creatie proces is eigenlijk altijd anders. Ik heb een lange tijd enkel gecreëerd vanuit de innerlijke gevoelsgolven die ik ervaarde, maar dit is het laatste jaar enorm omgedraaid. Ik zie mezelf een beetje als een spons die intrigerende beweging rond bij opneemt. Zo begint mijn creatie proces vaak op de trein met mijn notebook in de hand, en van zodra ik thuis kom, duik ik vaak meteen in men home studio om de teksten en melodieën die ik onderweg heb gecreëerd op te nemen en te producen. Ik schrijf al men nummers zelf en ben ook vaak mijn eigen producer en componist van de muzikale lijnen. De laatste jaren heb ik ook heel veel inspiratie gevonden in samenwerkingen met andere producers en muzikanten, zoals Gust Decoster, waarmee ik men laatste EP Sexy Tragedy heb gecreëerd en opgenomen.

Mijn muzikale processen fluctueren dus heel erg, met de specifieke samenwerkingen die ik aanga, wat ik de schoonheid vind aan kunst. 2. Waar zie je jezelf nu na je deelname aan The Voice?

Ik ben enorm gegroeid als zangeres doorheen het traject van The Voice, en kan mezelf eindelijk een zangeres noemen. Dit vult wel een leeg hoekje in mezelf, aangezien ik het altijd heel moeilijk heb gehad om het zo te durven benoemen.

Ik ben helemaal klaar om volledig te gaan voor mijn singer-songwriter carrière en ben al aan het hunkeren naar de fantastische artistieke plannen die er deze zomer aankomen. I’m more hungry then ever om te creëren, te delen met een groot publiek en te blijven groeien. Mijn volgend groot project is een lange grootschalige samenwerking met Annalena Fröhlich, een elektronische soundartist/componist, waar jullie op 26 juni in Magasin 4 in Brussel de eerste snippets live van kunnen horen. 3. Hoe verliep de auditie voor The Voice?

Ik moet toegeven dat ik mijn hart uit mijn hart heb voelen vallen tijdens de blind auditie. Ik kan me nog zo inbeelden hoe de stress door mijn lijf trilde, puur omdat dit echt mijn eerste ervaring was met tv.

Ik ben danser en performer als beroep dus niet bevreemd van het podium, maar die camera’s brengen toch nog net een andere spanning over. Ik kan me nog goed herinneren dat ik, juist voor ik de eerste keer op ging, me de studio inbeelden als een lege kleurloze doos, zonder lichten, zonder jury, voor de opstelling van de studio, en met dat beeld op podium ben gewandeld. Grote tip! 4. Wat zijn enkele van je mooiste herinneringen aan je werk in de muziek tot nu toe?

Ik heb vorig jaar op het podium van Brussels Jazz Weekend mogen spelen voor een volledig overbevolkt Sainte Catherine Plein, en dat was een magische ervaring. De energie die wij als muzikanten terug kregen van het publiek stak mijn ziel in brand. Dat is waarom ik dit doe, om die connectie te voelen en een moment van samenkomst te creëren, zonder judgment, regels, of ranking. Gewoon mensen die samen zijn. 5. Hoe was het om met Joost als coach te werken?

Joost heeft een warme plek in mijn hart ingenomen. Hij is een geweldig loyale, toegewijde coach, die zich puur en eerlijk naar me heeft opgesteld. Het was echt een prachtige ervaring om hem als coach te hebben, artistiek samen te werken maar vooral om hem te leren kennen als persoon, want Waw, he has a beautiful soul. Blijft zeker een grote inspiratie en compagnon. 6. Wat inspireert je?

Reizen inspireert me, de onverwachtse ontmoetingen met mensen uit zoveel verschillende realiteiten. Ik ben verliefd op een leven dat beweegt. Het luisteren naar de verhalen van individu’s is iets wat ik het liefste doe, en waar mijn inspiratie van begint te borrelen. Ik moet ook zeggen dat ik door mijn challenges met mentale en fysieke gezondheid een bepaald urgency voel om te schrijven en steun te bieden voor degene die doorheen een gelijk gevecht gaan. Ecofeminisme is mijn grootste drijfveer, a way of living, of thinking. Hiernaast, is Patti Smith een artiest die me al jaren inspireert in elke stap die ik zegt. Ze heeft zo een eigen aanpak van haar de manier waarop ze haar leven stuurt, en ik kijk enorm op naar haar vechtlust en openheid voor vernieuwing en uitdaging. 7. Wat hoop je te bereiken?

Ik hoop in de volgende jaren heel veel van mijn eigen muziek te kunnen delen met de wereld, en mijn eerste albums te kunnen uitbrengen. Hierrond ben ik momenteel in de startfase van een geweldig inspirerende samenwerking, die zich ook zal belichamen in een interdisciplinary en universele show, met post genre artiesten, zowel dansers als muzikanten. Ik hoop met mijn werk mensen, los van taal, geschiedenis en privileges, samen te kunnen brengen op een show die iedereen doet nadenken. Ik wil niet iets creëren waar iedereen het mee eens is, maar ik wil een gesprek opwakkeren, en emoties naar boven laten komen, dat is zoveel sterker. Ik hoop door mijn muzikale intuïtie te volgen, iets te kunnen bieden dat nog mist, dat blindde hoekje tussen de podiumkunsten en the big mainstream. En dat mag ongemakkelijk voelen voor mensen, zoals het ook ongemakkelijk is om jezelf elke dag uit te dagen om te groeien. Maar daar ligt volgens mij ook de schoonheid. 8. Hoe zou je je stijl omschrijven?

Post-genre. Ik heb me in de eerste jaren dat ik muziek uitbracht vaak vastgebonden aan een bepaald genre, maar dat voelde nooit compleet juist aan. Nu dat ik de fluctuaties en meer vromigheid in mijn muziek accepteer, voel ik dat dit me naar veel interessantere artistieke plekken brengt.

Dus liefst geef ik geen antwoord op deze vraag, maar als het moet: post-genre. 9. Wat vind je belangrijk in de kunst?

Dat het voor connectie zorgt. 10. Wat vind je het leukst aan zingen?

Zingen is zo puur, zo instinctief! Je lichaam is je instrument, net als in dans, en ik denk dat ik daarom al heel mijn leven met beide niet kan stoppen. Er is bijna geen lijn tussen waar je ziel doorheen gaat, en wat je met je stem uitdrukt, een rechtstreekse doorpas. Dat vind ik een prachtig idee, maar ook soms enorm intens om kunst zo puur te belichamen. 11. Wat is de volgende stap in je nieuwe carrière?

Na The Voice ben ik eigenlijk meteen in de studio gesprongen, en heb deze zomer een aantal vette shows op de planning staan met mijn band. Mijn volgende stap is dus zeker een grote release van mijn eigen muziek, en samenwerkingen aangaan met andere artiesten die me al lang voeden via hun kunst. The Voice heeft me zeker geholpen met verspreiding en zichtbaarheid, en wil me, met deze boost dan ook volledig inzetten om mijn singer-songwriter carrière naar een hoger level te brengen, voor een groter publiek, en op een hoger tempo. I’m so ready to share my music with the world. 12. Welk advies zou je aspirant-artiesten geven?

Get out there, show yourself! je bent al een artiest, dat zit steen sterk in je nieren. Geloven in je kunst is de eerste stap. Want wees maar zeker dat er een grote groep mensen je kunst nodig hebben.

1. What does your musical process look like?

My musical creation process is actually always different. For a long time, I created solely from the inner waves of emotion I experienced, but this has completely reversed over the past year. I see myself a bit like a sponge absorbing intriguing movement around me. For instance, my creation process often starts on the train with my notebook in hand, and as soon as I get home, I often dive straight into my home studio to record and produce the lyrics and melodies I created along the way. I write all my songs myself and am also often my own producer and composer of the musical lines. In recent years, I have also found a lot of inspiration in collaborations with other producers and musicians, such as Gust Decoster, with whom I created and recorded my latest EP, Sexy Tragedy.

So, my musical processes fluctuate a lot, with the specific collaborations I enter into being what I consider the beauty of art.

2. Where do you see yourself now after your participation in The Voice? 

I have grown tremendously as a singer throughout the journey of The Voice, and can finally call myself a singer. This does fill a void inside me, as I have always found it very difficult to dare to call myself that.

I am completely ready to fully commit to my singer-songwriter career and am already yearning for the fantastic artistic plans coming up this summer. I’m more hungry than ever to create, share with a large audience, and keep growing. My next major project is a long-term, large-scale collaboration with Annalena Fröhlich, an electronic sound artist/composer, the first snippets of which you can hear live on June 26 at Magasin 4 in Brussels.

3. How did the audition for The Voice go?

I have to admit that I felt my heart drop during the blind audition. I can still vividly picture the stress trembling through my body, purely because this was truly my first experience with TV.

As a dancer and performer by profession, I am not unfamiliar with the stage, but those cameras convey a different kind of tension. I can still clearly remember imagining the studio—just before I went on for the first time—as an empty, colorless box, without lights, without a jury, in front of the studio setup, and walking onto the stage with that image in mind. Great tip!

4. What are some of your most beautiful memories of your work in music so far?

Last year, I got to play on the stage of Brussels Jazz Weekend in front of a completely packed Sainte Catherine Square, and that was a magical experience. The energy we, as musicians, received back from the audience set my soul on fire. That is why I do this, to feel that connection and create a moment of coming together, without judgment, rules, or ranking. Just people being together.

5. How was it working with Joost as a coach?

Joost has taken a warm place in my heart. He is an incredibly loyal, dedicated coach who was pure and honest with me. It was truly a wonderful experience to have him as a coach, to collaborate artistically, but above all to get to know him as a person, because wow, he has a beautiful soul. He certainly remains a great inspiration and companion.

6. What inspires you?

Traveling inspires me, the unexpected encounters with people from so many different realities. I am in love with a life that moves. Listening to the stories of individuals is what I love doing most, and what makes my inspiration bubble up. I must also say that, due to my challenges with mental and physical health, I feel a certain urgency to write and offer support to those going through a similar battle. Ecofeminism is my greatest driving force, a way of living, of thinking. In addition, Patti Smith is an artist who has inspired me for years in every step I take. She has such a unique approach to the way she steers her life, and I greatly admire her fighting spirit and openness to innovation and challenge.

7. What do you hope to achieve?

In the coming years, I hope to be able to share a lot of my own music with the world and release my first albums. Regarding this, I am currently in the initial stages of an incredibly inspiring collaboration, which will also manifest itself in an interdisciplinary and universal show featuring post-genre artists, including both dancers and musicians. Through my work, I hope to bring people together—regardless of language, history, and privilege—in a show that makes everyone think. I don't want to create something that everyone agrees with, but I want to spark a conversation and bring emotions to the surface; that is so much more powerful. By following my musical intuition, I hope to offer something that is still missing: that blind spot between the performing arts and the big mainstream. And that may feel uncomfortable for people, just as it is uncomfortable to challenge yourself to grow every day. But I believe that is also where the beauty lies.

8. How would you describe your style?

Post-genre. In the first few years that I released music, I often tied myself to a specific genre, but that never felt completely right. Now that I accept the fluctuations and greater piety in my music, I feel that this is taking me to much more interesting artistic places.

So I prefer not to answer this question, but if I have to: post-genre.

9. What do you find important in art?

That it creates connection.

10. What do you like most about singing?

Singing is so pure, so instinctive! Your body is your instrument, just like in dance, and I think that is why I haven't been able to stop doing either my whole life. There is almost no line between what your soul passes through and what you express with your voice; a direct connection. I find that a beautiful idea, but also sometimes incredibly intense to embody art so purely.

11. What is the next step in your new career?

After The Voice, I actually jumped straight into the studio, and I have a number of awesome shows planned for this summer with my band. So my next step is definitely a major release of my own music, and collaborating with other artists who have long nourished me through their art. The Voice has certainly helped me with distribution and visibility, and with this boost, I want to fully commit to taking my singer-songwriter career to a higher level, for a larger audience, and at a faster pace. I’m so ready to share my music with the world. 

12. What advice would you give aspiring artists?

Get out there, show yourself! You are already an artist; it is deeply ingrained in you.

Believing in your art is the first step. Because rest assured that a large group of people need your art.
