An Underlooked Classic: Technohead's 1995 Debut
TECHNOHEAD: HEADSEX
SCORE: 88/100
Upbeat, high-tempo Gabber can be found throughout the entirety of Headsex - and this album is Gabber for the clubbers who like their music fast and hard without being too heavy in its material.Rarely can you find an album as carefree and bouncy as this one is, but this album prides itself on being as quick and upbeat as possible. The album is much more flashy than most Gabber records on the market - and it has mainstream appeal while still being grimy and distorted with heavy kicks and ample rhythms to kick and dance to.
I Wanna Be a Hippy was the biggest hit that Technohead had ever released, with the song being one of the most iconic pieces of music to come out of the Mokum record label. The entire album has the same Happy Hardcore laced sound - but it's more aligned with Gabber than anything else. It's a rare record that truly encapsulates the best of two different genres, and the level of experimentation on Headsex is entirely incredible. From hardcore Gabber to breakbeats, this album has even more than you might expect it to.
Gabber was at a massive peak in the mid-90's, and this album was one of the core pieces in the puzzle of the genre while experimenting with other sounds and labels to create an album that feels like ten DJ's playing on the same stage - and all of them are displaying different genres.
Technohead are much more than just their definitive hit single - and this album is a true display of artistic masterclass in every form. It's sharp, loud, and danceable; and the result is a completely infectious album that no listeners will be able to get enough of. It's catchy, quick, and truthfully infectious in every way.
The groups ability to take risks and make songs that are this flashy paid off incredibly well for their sound - and although this album is massively overlooked, it's well worth a listen. This is a project that many people may not have even known about; and yet it's one of the most crucial Gabber albums there is.
Every single song on this album is different from the last. The amount of variety means that it's something for every electronic music fan out there - and fans of any subgenres of electronic are sure to love at least one song off of Headsex.
