Third Times' the Charm: Deadmau5 Strikes with 'Random Album Title'
DEADMAU5: RANDOM ALBUM TITLE
SCORE: 85/100
Random Album Title is where Deadmau5 started to become a highly recognized and influential figure in EDM, and this album marked his third venture into full-length sound, becoming what would be his most recognized album in his earliest days and marking the milestone of I Remember.
This album experiments with more variety and depth in Zimmerman's sound, and the resulting album would create a blueprint for his projects to follow, with the stylization and formatting of this album being a path he would continue to take and perfect throughout his career, creating a bigger and bigger name for himself one album at a time. Other artists would go on to be influenced by Zimmerman's songs on this album, with the second edit of Brazil being a highly-recognized sample amongst artists like Kylie Minogue and Taio Cruz years after this album was initially released.
It doesn't get much more cohesive than this.
On Random Album Title, everything transitions together with an absolutely flawless sound, leading the entire album to feel like one continuous mix - even despite the "main" version of the album being unmixed. The songs lead into each other perfectly, and it isn't a project where you can pick and choose; it's something you have to listen to in order from start to finish to experience it the right way, and it's more than worthwhile.
This is an album worth moving to. The songs keep a consistent beat while experimenting and looping sounds, and the result is something that still feels fresh in the world of house music even almost two decades ago - the album is striking as a whole, and it's one of the most important founding puzzle pieces of Zimmerman's career; without this album, the community wouldn't have any of his other big albums, either, as this is the one that set the scene for where he would go.
With this album, Zimmerman showed his potential on a much larger scale, showcasing improvements and variety while working on his sound with a focused edge. This allowed for his career to move up and for this album to become his most highly appraised works from the 2000's, but it also allowed for him to stick to exactly where it was he wanted to go.
Everything here sounds incredibly big - it's an album with a sound that is notoriously larger than life, which is highly due to the level of equipment that Zimmerman has become iconic for using, which results in a very well put together and polished sound. Elements of various house subgenres as well as trance can be found on this album, and Zimmerman uses slowly growing sonic elements and heavy repetition to create songs that stick and create tightly wound grooves for the dancefloor.
I love this review! ^^ You always talk about music so well, and I love it
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! That really means a lot to me, I appreciate your support so so so much <3
DeleteI love this album. I wish people that dont produce music knew how much work and how difficult it is to make music like this.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree! Even the most simple house beats take a level of complexity that many people fail to acknowledge. It's great to be able to spread the knowledge of just how much goes into it and how much is beneath the surface. Deadmau5 is just one of many examples of highly complex and layered music.
DeleteIm definetly gonna have to give this a listen, especially after reading this excellent review!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do :)
DeleteI remember when first came out and I'd play random music in grandma Jenny's car and she'd say "who's this deadmonkey?" Lol
ReplyDeleteHAHAH! That's gold!
