HOLD THE MUSTARD PRESENTS: HEAVY METAL MANTINEE - VOLUME TWO With From Beneath, The Blade Itself, Wound Of Eden, Killing Twins, and Dredge the River
Sunday's show at the Chill House was a five-band all day rager, and every band made sure to bring their all to the venue for Hold the Mustard's second installment of the HEAVY METAL MATINEE concert series.
The setup for the day-turned-night was great, with incredible community and team efforts bringing together a crowd for barbequed hot dogs and heavy, floor-shaking music.
Each band had their fair-share of merch to fulfill every fan's needs, and it was another show for the books with some heavy-hitters from other areas outside of BC and the Fraser Valley embarking on a touring journey just to grace the Chill House thanks to Hold the Mustard's incredible show-planning efforts and their ability to find new, unique bands for the venue.
The management of the evening was incredible, and it was an early, 9PM end for those who had school or work slotted for the following evening. There was no better way to end off spring break with some heavy music - and this show delivered the most head-splitting metal imaginable.
The social club atmosphere allowed for people to mingle and socialize before the show - and the night felt both like a large-scale concert and a day of socialization at a community barbeque.
It was an evening packed full of incredible, loud sound quality that could be heard both inside and out, and great vibes and people came together for a show that was nothing but a stunner on all fronts. The Chill House season is just warming up - and shows like this are even more of a must in the summer months.
Everything was up and running despite some chilly weather still marking the mid-section of Chilliwack spring, and the evening was best spent inside of the warm venue where the five bands put on blaring performances for anyone and everyone who had shown up.
-------------------------------------
Dredge the River always give over 100 percent of their energy when performing, and they were a perfectly heavy addition to the wild HEAVY METAL MATINEE lineup.
The band opened the evening up with their floor-shaking, blaring sound that left the crowd immersed in their swampy metal sound that is unlike any other band in the Fraser Valley. Their sound has been upgraded with new flair and confidence - and every show they put on gets better and better.
The band are steadily growing their sound through continued performances at the venue, and this set was one of their most organized and confident yet. They put on a nonstop performance that never missed a beat - and every member put on one hell of a show that made them impossible to forget.
It's clear to see that the band are making a name for themselves - and this opening performance made sure that the rest of the night would work to keep their energy alive; as hard as it is to match the sludgy, raw energy of Dredge the River.
Their performance was marked with punchy drums and blasting beats, with their sound being loud and ever-commanding. The gentle giants know how to put on a memorable performance, and they were without a doubt the best way to bring the heat into the Chill House. This show was another excellent showcase of the band, showing off their talents, skills, and sound with a set that was impossible to ignore. Their stage presence was enough to make the venue shake, and it's clear that they had everything they wanted to bring to the stage locked down.
Not only were they sonically stunning on stage, they were also incredibly energetic performers that clearly adore what it is that they do - they love being able to bring their sound to each venue they play, and they showed it well during this early Sunday set.
A sludgy, slamming performance straight out of the swamp made Dredge the River one of the most important acts on the bill - and they're without a doubt one of the main metal bands to keep on your radar. Their intensity is something you won't find anywhere else; and you won't find a nicer group of metal musicians anywhere, either.
Their set was completely loud, raw, and unfiltered, and the band showcased yet again to the Chill House that they know how to put on a great show. Their set was nonstop and entirely cohesive - and it's clear to see that they just keep getting better and better.
The band put on an aggressive, sharp, and focused performances that was unique to them and their sound. The band members are exceptionally kind people off stage - but they're beasts when they get to performing, with guttural team-vocals and an exceptionally riffy sound that will leave you wanting to see them again and again. They were without a doubt a perfect local addition to the HEAVY METAL MATINEE - and it's clear that they're here to stay.

Killing Twins continued the energy with a well-managed set that was quick to follow after Dredge the River while still leaving time for people to enjoy the evening barbeque creating a fragrant atmosphere outside of the Chill House.
It isn't hard to see that the band are sure to go far on their musical endeavors; and their performance at the Chill House shook the venue into knowing it too.
The band were the young ones out of the lineup, with their sound hailing from Metro Vancouver while they are still mainly teens. These young talents bring a fierce death metal sound to the stage, and they know how to work a crowd through their exceptionally loud sound and stage presence.
Their performance was exceptionally loud and commanding with a heavy death-influenced metal sound that blended heavy distortion and screaming vocals into an unforgettably heavy set that truly brought the heavy to HEAVY METAL MATINEE.
Killing Twins know metal. They know how to play it loud, fast, and heavy - and it's something that made their Chill House set that much more memorable. When it's clear to see that a band has their sound locked down and full of skill, it makes for the best performances imaginable; which the members of Killing Twins are well aware of.The band carried an immediately efficient stage presence that demanded for people to get up and move, citing their heavy music and making usage of various performance styles and tactics to ensure that the venue was getting a show alongside the heavy palate that the band had to offer up. The vocalist was able to work the crowd in a way that showcased that the band is truly meant to perform; and it worked wonders to bring even more life into the venue as the evening climbed along its runtime.
An immediately noticeable aspect about the band is their usage of distortion in their music, which translates into exceptionally memorable stage performances. Their set at the Chill House brought their all to a stage that was a way out for them, and they brought the Vancouver heat to Chilliwack for the evening. Their sound was unique and abrasive, successfully standing out from the other bands on the bill while carrying out the required energy and sounds to make them another great fit for the night.
Exceptionally loud death-laced metal was brought to the Chill House stage throughout Killing Twins' immersive set; and the band's great sound introduced a thumpy and fast sound palate to the stage that brought something new and invigorating to the table.
The band's multi-influenced sound was a treat to hear live; and they're yet another semi-local group of talents that must be seen live. Their sound is brought up by ten notches live, and they're a band that brings their all to the stage and makes themselves immediately known through fast drums, thick guitars, and intensely heavy vocals alongside a drastic backdrop of sonic elements.
-------------------------------------
Wound of Eden were the third band of the night - and they were yet another smashingly heavy addition to the Sunday HEAVY METAL MATINEE as the evening progressed. Their complex, catered sound added even more energy to the venue for the night; and it's no wonder as to why they were chosen for the lineup.
The band's thick sound had everyone completely immersed into their performance, and it was clear to see what made them so special and such a great pick for the show. Their sound was loud enough to feel in your chest, and they brought an earth-shattering energy to the venue that made their set exceptionally memorable.
Their sound on stage for the night was abrasive and rough while bringing something new and incredibly skillful to the stage of the Chill House. The band is made up of unique members that work together incredibly well; and it's always refreshing to see a band that has their sound and feel down while still working as a team on such a large scale.
Another intense and deeply guttural band being brought to the stage meant that this HEAVY METAL MATINEE kept getting more and more memorable with each act, Wound Of Eden marked a turning point for the night where the sun started to set and the pits started to form, with heavy moshing and a massive energy being given to the members of the band while they blared out screams and deeply memorable riffs every chance that they got.The sheer intensity that Wound Of Eden brought to the Chill House stage was enough to make them one of the most high-energy performers that have slammed down at the venue in recent times, and their style proved them worthy of gracing the stage. Their sound was a mix of edge, style, deep vocals, and heavy metal all in one with guttural singing and complex grooves making them unforgettable amongst a five-band lineup; a difficult, yet applaudable feat.
Wound Of Eden helped to bring the energy of the evening up to its full potential, with steady mosh pits and a nonstop set making the venue even more lively than it had been prior to the band's set. Their heavy usage of instrumental work alongside a floor-shaking sound that was amazingly heavy and full of depth made them one of the many highlights of the night, and their humbleness of the stage sealed the deal of authenticity for their performance.
-------------------------------------
Before the main attraction were slotted to set the stage, chainsaw death metal slammers The Blade Itself made sure to leave their mark on the stage with a sound that bleeds deep and smashes skulls. Their sound is one that will grab you by the neck and indoctrinate you to the band - and they're an act you won't want to miss if you have the chance to catch them live anywhere near you.
The band's heavy, throbbing sound added a layer of punchiness to the Chill House stage, with a loud and heavy sound that ran deep enough to feel in your body while their energetic performance invited people to join in on the chaos through moshing, dancing, and headbanging.
Their set was massively energetic, which was brought on by the unique sound and style of the band that brought something hugely heavy to the stage through guttural death metal. The band's description of themselves as "chainsaw metal" couldn't be any more accurate, and they made sure to show the Chill House crowd exactly what their label means.
When a band is able to clearly annunciate themselves and their style as The Blade Itself did at the Chill House, it leaves a lasting impression on fans and crowds; and the band was clearly highly aware of this while performing. It was clear to see how much the band loves to perform and bring their energy to life on a larger scale, and it made for the best possible leadup to the headliner of the night, with their set being incredibly well organized and fun to be a part of at all times.
The Blade Itself brought an ambitious sound full of intense screams and relentless energy to the Chill House stage; and they made sure to send the night off with a bang before From Beneath played their headlining set in promotion of their debut EP, Marrow OV Eden.
-------------------------------------
From Beneath put on an arena-worthy performance at the Chill House that utilized deep crowd movement, guttural, strong vocals, and new lighting in order to create an atmosphere that made the band completely unforgettable. The resulting set was one of the best that the Chill House walls have ever seen, and it was no wonder as to why the touring band was chosen to headline this second instalment of Hold the Mustard's HEAVY METAL MATINEE series. Their sound is a rugged mix of deathcore and death metal, alongside the bands other varied influences and stunning performance aspects that immediately set them apart from any other performers that have hit the Chill House.
The band hailed all the way from both Winnipeg (lovingly called "Winterpeg" by members of the band when talking about the cold weather of the evening) and Alberta in order to play the Chill House, and they're a band that you must keep on your radar before they hit it big - which will be very soon. The band's style and prowess for performing showcases their hunger for touring and reaching various audiences, and it's rare that you'll see a show quite like this one put on at the Chill House.
From Beneath were slotted for this show as part of their tour to promote their debut EP, Marrow OV Eden, which had an early release on March 25th - just four days prior to their embalming performance at the Chill House. The EP is massive in its sound; and I was fortunate enough to be able to review it before the show, which made them playing the entire project from front to back that much more special. When a band is able to showcase their genuine love towards their projects by playing them from start to finish live, it means that you have found a band worth keeping on your radar. The project came to life with even more potency than it had ever had on streaming, and if you missed out on your chance to see them, you can live out their sound through any streaming service you can listen to your music on.
Their setup was stunning, with exceptional stage lighting and unique styles present in each band member making them stand out even more than they already did with just their sound alone. The singer wasn't shy on making demands of the crowd to make them move and give the band their energy - and he was met with exceptional responses that were surely pleasing for the band and their wants when it comes to performing.
From Beneath were without a doubt one of the most focused and loud bands that I have ever seen live, and their intensity was unlike anything else I have ever seen. It was almost otherworldly to see their heavy sound come to life on the stage, and their massive energy was something hugely difficult and impressive for them to pull off. Their sound was massive, and it shook the floor of the venue for the final time on Sunday before the next show on Tuesday commences.
The band blended atmospheric elements alongside gritty, rugged instrumentals to create an immersive concert experience that felt high-budget and exceptionally full of depth, and it closed off the night with one of the most memorable sets that the Chill House has ever had. They ended off the night with a beatdown of heaviness for anyone who would listen, and the crowd gave them the energy that they needed to get them to the gold.
