Chill House Punk Night: Mad World, False Flags, and Hell Crimes

Saturday marked the end of a two-night show streak for the Chill House, with this show being exactly a week in to March and providing some unforgettable punk tunes for the crowd of the night. The show was a more laid-back spectacle for fans to enjoy the crowd with leisure, and it was a night full of great music and talented bands.

The sets of the night were longer than expected, and each band got a large portion of time to both set up and showcase their music - the smaller bill allowed for more playtime amongst the bands, and it showcased the sounds of each band exceptionally well. The setup for the night was unique and incredibly visually appealing, and the turnout for the show was a good amount of people that showed up for some great local music from various areas of the Fraser Valley.

Community atmosphere was a massive part of this show - as it is with every show at the Chill House. Longer setup times allowed for socialization to flourish while the crowd steadily formed and came in piece by piece, and this ample time between bands allowed for chatter to help drive the show and the venue into the community-based space that it is. The crowd of the night was incredibly respectful and pleasant to be around, and the setup of the entire night was exceptional.

Sound quality was through the roof with this show, with incredibly clear aspects and great sound mixing that led to no performer being drowned out at all. Everything came together incredibly well, and the incredibly kind and exceptional people working behind the scenes at the heart of the venue helped to bring it all together.

This was a show that pulled a new and unique crowd with a bill of bands that were all from areas other than Chilliwack while still being local to the Fraser Valley, and it was a highly different and enjoyable show with exceptional performances from every band.

Hell crimes hailed all the way from Abbotsford to venture out to perform an unforgettable set at the Chill House - and their sound was even more unique than I ever could have expected them to be. A mix of space-age synths and laid back punk, Hell Crimes were the perfect all-rounder to open up the night with.

The band utilizes an old school esque punk sound that has thick, punchy drumming and a unique lineup of band members that stand out from other bands by tenfold with their bold, interesting style. Hell Crimes are led by a highly talented female vocalist, and their entire set was made unique by the work of all four members of the band - with each of them radiating a positive energy off of one another while creating a highly enjoyable atmosphere in every song.

Their sound uses many different influences to create highly unique punk music that is different from any other band in the current scene, and their set was without a doubt one of the biggest highlights of the night; although it's impossible to compare three unique and splendid talents that were all of the same high caliber.

A unique aesthetic makes Hell Crimes highly enjoyable - and their style helps to make them one of the most memorable bands in the entire scene, with their deeply varied sound and highly refined performance style creating something that is down to earth and highly enjoyable. Their sound was a blend of laid back punk that was still harsh and highly danceable, and the resulting set was something incredibly fun and full of positive emotions all around.

Their music is highly upbeat and enjoyable, and they make for the perfect night-out live music soundtrack that you won't find anywhere else. Their set had a huge amount of reverberation and power that made it a massively fun show. Every member is unique and incredible in their own right, and the guitar, bass, drums, and vocals all came together and bounced off of one another to create something sharp, polished, and massively exclusive to the band.

The performance was continuous and did not have any dips in energy throughout - an impressive feat for a band accomplishing so much in such an intimate performance.

Not only was their set completely memorable, it was also a spectacle of multi-talented instrumentalists and musicians that had many different skills that came to light. Rarely does a band mix so many bold styles together into one, but Hell Crimes did just that to a massive degree. Their mystifying blend of space age synthesizers with punchy punk music created a fresh and new sound that lasted throughout the entirety of their set.

False Flags were another highly old-school influenced punk band hailing from Hope, with their high intensity sound being immediately infectious through throbbing, pulsing drums with a massive amount of punch and spark.

Their sound was the kind of loud that you can feel in your bones, and it made their set even more enjoyable. Their sound was something classic and highly nostalgic while bringing it over to a modern crowd, and it worked wonders to create a lively and incredible atmosphere that was fun and full of energy.

The band played loud and sharp, with a huge amount of focus and rage put into political lyrics that were raw and deeply upfront, creating a sense of confrontation through their music that is always refreshing to hear. The root of punk has always been the politics, and False Flags are one of many bands staying true to the roots and importance's of punk.

A change in energy with hugely fast paced songs made False Flags stand out by tenfold, and they helped to bring the energy up in the venue while building the excitement for Mad World - creating a night full of punk and politics into full swing. Their sound was both raw and incredibly polished, and their refined, yet gritty sound is something that the local bands do best.

With direct lyrics and great vocalists that blended solo and blended vocals to create a set and sound with depth and style, the band set the stage incredibly well and made themselves known by the very start of their set.

Mad world played Chilliwack for their first time, coming from Abbotsford to deliver ska-laced songs throughout the venue. They played their set loud and proud, and their clear dedication to their craft was exceptionally refreshing to see. The members of the band were especially down to earth and kindhearted, and it was reflected in their upbeat and highly enjoyable music.

Their ska punk style is something you don't see very often in the scene, and it's a great genre to be able to have bands playing and keeping alive through their performances. The community for the band was great, and their fanbase was largely apparent, leaving them with a very good reputation.

The band's sound is heavy and loud while still being fun and upbeat - it isn't hostile, it's something dedicated to creating songs that are enjoyable and perfect for performing live time and time again. The songs are infectious and unique, and the instrumental work of the band was something that sets them apart from many other bands.

A mix of sharp aggression, strong vocals, and mixed genres allowed for the band to create a versatile and immersive set that ended the night off right, and it was another highly fulfilling show at the Chill House.
