My Name Is Skrillex: The Beginning of an Era
SKRILLEX: MY NAME IS SKRILLEX (EP)
SCORE: 97/100
My Name Is Skrillex is the most introductory title possible for Sonny Moore's expedition into electronic music in 2010 - which came after previous experimentation with his mononymously released Gypsyhook after he parted ways with post-hardcore band From First to Last, which he had been the vocalist from. Instead of singing, he diverted to production instead; with this project being his first, yet one of his most impressive on all fronts.
With this EP, Moore had discovered a new sound he wanted to expand upon on his own, and he would soon become one of the most important and influential figures in all of electronic music, being one of the pioneers of both brostep and Complextro while making sounds that no other producer could come anywhere close to - even over 15 years later. It's an entirely timeless piece of music where every song stands out and makes itself more than just simply known, and some of his finest material resides on this short project. In only six tracks, Moore managed to make a complete name for himself, and it wasn't long before he would go on to become one of the biggest electronic musicians of all time.
The name Skrillex was not something that Moore had used until this point for any of his music - and it would go on to become the name he is most known as. The EP was released for free on his Myspace page in 2010 (which, believe it or not - almost his entire career was spawned through Myspace in the 2000's and 2010's), and no one could have predicted the impact that Moore would go on to have.
This EP is one of the most harsh and intense Skrillex projects you can get your hands on, and the artistry of it is something that is completely unmatched. The soundscapes on this EP are otherworldly, and there's no wondering as to why Skrillex is considered to be such a wildly talented producer; this EP is proof of it, and the fact that this was his first "proper" electronic project speaks very loudly about just how cut out for the job he was.
EDM has never sounded as futuristic as this EP managed to sound for its time, and it's a project that makes you wonder how something so incredible could be engineered this perfectly. It's clear that Moore was born with a gift, and this project is something that will make you feel like you're at a club.
It's rare to find electronic music that is so unrestrained and full of harsh sounds; and the audio engineering qualities found in Skrillex's music makes him one of the most important artists of all time. No other artist has ever come anywhere near making music as infectious as he has managed to craft over the years, and this is without a doubt one of his most heavily underrated and underlooked projects - it's a rare gem in his discography that is not as widely available, and it's one that every electronic fan needs to hear at least once.

Peak choice! It really is interesting to think about if people didn't think he was gonna get big doing this kind of music..but then it made him bigger than ever!
