When Broken Is Easily Fixed: Silverstein's Debut With Sharp Edges

SILVERSTEIN: WHEN BROKEN IS EASILY FIXED

SCORE: 100/100

The only bad thing about this album is the lack of attention it gets.

Silverstein's sharp dagger of a debut album helped to set the scene for their style and sound, with songs like Smashed Into Pieces and Bleeds No More showcasing them as one of the best and most underrated post-hardcore acts of all time.

This album makes usage of both raw and clean vocals, providing a dynamic shift that blends emo, screamo, post-hardcore, and metal into one album that is impossible to ignore. The sound engineering and mixing of this album are both completely brilliant, and the vocal work in particular makes Silverstein stand out as much as they do.

Shane Told is an incredible vocalist who does not get near enough credit, and the vocal layering alongside the variety throughout the album creates a striking contrast and songs that stick. The album itself is packed full of unique songs, songs that differ in tone, style, and sound while still keeping a consistent sound that screams "Silverstein" at every turn - it's uniquely, unapologetically theirs, and the turnout of the album is one that can be listened to endlessly, time and time again with songs that will never tire.

The amount of variety that When Broken Is Easily Fixed holds is deeply impressive and captivating, and this is an album that instantly captured me and kept me within its grasp. The songs are all deeply unique from one another, meaning that the short, but sweet runtime of the album is amplified by songs that stand out from one another. This isn't an album where the songs mesh into one another, it's an album where every song is star material.

It's hard to describe just how incredible this album manages to be - it isn't just another emo album, it's introspective, raw, and something incredibly unique that mixes all of the best subgenres and the aspects that make these subgenres so great into something new and exciting; even over twenty years later.
