Sound Collage Oddity: ∆ ˚ ø ¨ ˙ ª - ∆--- (EP)
∆ ˚ ø ¨ ˙ ª: ∆---
SCORE: 86/100
For such a massively short sound collage oddity, this is an exceptional example of experimental music and everything it stands for - the songs vary in length, with the final track being under thirty seconds in length, and the bulk of the EP is made up of a nearly five-minute track that consists of various senses of ambience and unique, distorted soundscapes.
Never in my career did I think I would stumble across anything remotely similar to the tape music of Boyd Rice - but this EP is almost exactly like it, with locked groove-esque samples, chopped and garbled aspects of various pieces of media, and an unnerving sound that is completely infectious and highly interesting.
The unknown aspects of this project make it even more interesting; who knows where the samples originated, who this artist is, and where they went after this EP? It feels like a musical mystery, and I'm shocked to have found another project like this.
∆--- is almost eerie, feeling like distant memories played through tapes with various elements of field recordings and garbled, unexpected, and unpredictable samples that feel like a completely drastic memory shift. It's seven minutes of pure distortion, and everything aspect of the project feels like it could never be replicated.
When experimental music pushes the boundaries on what is music and what is simply classified as objects of sound, it is at its best. This is an artistic statement without a word - and it's something that anyone would be lucky to stumble upon.

I want to know more about this type of music .. would stuff like this be a good starting point
ReplyDeleteI would say that albums like 'Everywhere at the End of Time' (for darker, more repetitive ambient music that uses a different style, very emotionally bound), 'Boyd Rice' (self-titled, locked groove tape music *and one of my favorite albums of all time!), and 'Vicodin Hydrocodone' (field recordings, eerie, hospital themed concept album). It depends if you are looking more for tape music with sampling or things like field recordings or Musique Concrète.
DeleteNever really heard anything like that, might have to check it out
ReplyDeleteIt's worth the short runtime it provides!
