Boundaries Break: fallingwithscissors' 'the death and birth of an angel'

fallingwithscissors: the death and birth of an angel

Score: 76/100

Atmospheric and messy, fallingwithscissors serve up a deeply dark and genre-bending EP with the death and birth of an angel.

This project is a mix of breakcore and metalcore primarily, with elements from genres like cybergrind and mathcore presenting themselves throughout the short and fast-paced EP. The vocals are brutal and guttural, and the sounds are sharp and piercing on a very high degree. Everything is smashed together in a harsh and messy manner, but it all comes together brilliantly.

Each clamorous moment leads to something bigger, and both the clean and raw vocal deliveries provide depth and spectacular vocal performances for the genre. It's a mix of plenty of bands and sounds, and the songs transmit different dimensions as they progress instead of staying put together as one sonic harmony.

In truth, there is no harmony to the death and birth of an angel, and it's what makes the EP stand out as much as it does. It's highly striking and hits hard and fast, with the intro showing a slow build before breaking off into a fast and messy project that blends a beautifying chaos into more than just metallic clatter.

Every turn is unexpected and brash, with a boldness from the band that few other artists could ever even begin to implicate. Everything manages to come together despite the odds and ends throughout the various twists and turns that the EP goes through; and it's clear that the band could never just stay trapped inside of one label or genre.

The breakcore-laced elements of this EP are particularly striking, with the ending moments of (un)equivalent_exchange being one of the most defining pieces of the entire project. The sharp blend of electronic and metal elements come together in a stellar projection throughout the projects' short runtime, and the ending result is gorgeous.

It's chaotic and sporadic, often feeling unpredictable and not as expected; but the moments that you least expect end up redeeming the band and making them as interesting as can be. The songs are intense and intentionally noisy, using elements that clash against each other and loud soundscapes to create an invigorating and unique EP that crosses genre boundaries and adds in a bit of everything at once.
