HOLD THE MUSTARD PRODUCTIONS: Know Before You Go - an Interview with Caustic Fog

CAUSTIC FOG will be one of four bands performing at the Chill House tomorrow thanks to Hold the Mustard Productions, with the bands unique and heavy sound providing the exact kind of energy that the venue needs to keep the night going for everyone in attendance of the show on Saturday night. 

The band is hailing all the way from Edmonton Alberta to perform for a British Columbian crowd - and you won't want to miss out on your chance to catch them live locally before it's too late. This show will be the first show of the band's joint WESTERN OBLITERATION TOUR, which is shared with Divine Apprehension. The Chill House will be setting the tone for the entire tour going forward, and it's where the bands will show off exactly what makes them worth seeing. 

Knowing all about the band you're going to see is one of the best ways to get the excitement surrounding shows up even higher, which is why it's essential to learn all about CAUSTIC FOG before their energetic performance tomorrow night. Two of the band's members, Cam and Caeden, were kind enough to provide helpful insight into the band's sound, style, and inspirations.

1. How would you describe CAUSTIC FOG for those who haven’t heard of you yet?

Cam, Guitarist: CAUSTIC FOG is a pummeling Death Metal band out of Edmonton, Alberta ripe with 90's influence.

2. What defines the bands sound?

Cam: Our sound is defined by a cascade of punishing, groove-laden drumming, relentless riffing, and gut wrenching vocals that deliver an agonizing and heavy sonic experience. We've definitely honed in on a more brutal and authentic sound in writing for our upcoming full length.

3. What has working with the band been like? What makes your role special?

Cam: Working with the Fog has been a very fulfilling endeavor over the last 2 years. Through the various changes and hardships we've had to deal with in our personal lives it's been difficult to navigate both the writing of our full length as well as remaining an active band in the community, but it couldn't feel more worth it now, especially looking back at how far we've come over the last couple years and what we now have in the works with the new material and tour. While everyone in the band brings something unique to the table, personally the creative freedom and amount of emotion that can be expressed on a guitar is vast and feels very rewarding especially in the context of writing for a larger creative project, which the upcoming album certainly is for all of us.

4. What sets CAUSTIC FOG apart from other bands?

Cam: Caustic Fog brings a unique flavour of Death Metal to the table that harnesses that raw energy which defines the genre; blending it with harrowing, and melancholic passages which create a one of a kind live experience.

5. What will the band be bringing to the Chill House stage during your exciting set?

Caeden, Vox: We are going to be bringing some exciting new material which we are all stoked for, especially with the direction the album is headed musically. More brutaler, fastererer and gnarlier than ever. 

6. What makes a CAUSTIC FOG show worth seeing?

Caeden: To put it into one sentence… A Caustic Fog show feels like tearing the flesh from your face as your cranium erupts in pure euphoria, if you happen to be familiar.

7. What are some of the most rewarding parts of making music and sharing it with the world?

Caeden: For us we feel the most rewarding part of this all is the joy of creating something from nothing, creating music just from thoughts and ideas, writing lyrics to topics we are passionate about. What is this Earth without art, it's just a big floating rock in space. We are lucky enough to be right here, right now, so we want to spend our time here doing what we love, with who we love. The music is our sanctuary, and our freedom from the incessant suffering in this world. If we can use what little platform we have right now to speak about these topics then who knows what could be possible down the line.

8. What are your plans for the future of the band?

Caeden: Right now we are working towards our first full length release which is a massive milestone for us all. Beyond that it's hard to say, all I do know is that we don't plan on stopping any time soon. This band is a getaway from life, it's a breath of fresh air and if we can keep writing music that we love with people we care about the rest will work itself out.

9. Where do you see yourself going musically?

Cam: I can see us growing a lot into this new sound that we're refining. As many Death Metal bands as there are I feel like there is still much left unspoken musically and we're trying to fill the void that scratches that itch in our brain. 

10. Who/what are some of your biggest influences and inspirations?

Cam: While our sound is heavily influenced by bands such as Suffocation, Mortal Decay, Gorguts and countless others we try to rely on our own experiences in life for inspiration especially in how it relates to the themes and subject matter in the music. I feel like we are able to channel a lot of that negative energy into our writing which is what makes it distinctly ours.

11. Lastly, what is one piece of advice you would give to any aspiring artists out there?

Caeden: One piece of advice I would give to others is simply never give up, even if life throws you curveballs which make things seem impossible to reach, simply never let go of the passion you hold deep down. Every single person in this world has a dream, find that dream and do absolutely everything in your power to reach that dream. Things have a way of working themselves out even if they feel so far away. You never know… it might just be around the corner, and if you gave up you would never know how close it actually was. Think of it like Schrodinger's Cat, if you never did that ONE thing, you’ll never actually know that it may have been the thing for you to reach your dreams, so just keep reaching.
